What is The Special Action When Changing to Reverse Gear?

If you noticed that when operation some manual transmission changing to reverse gear, it will add a special action: Press a button on the shift rod or slightly lift  the shift rod. Is this just a cool action, or requires a very complex parts to complete the changing reverse gear?

Reverse gear lock mechanism

In order to prevent shift rod changing to reverse gear when the vehicle moves forward, and thus have a great impact on the transmission gear, causing damage to components, usually, there will have the design of the reverse gear locking mechanism on manual transmission. When the shift rod is placed in extreme positions, the stop block of locking mechanism will be blocked by bezel, making it impossible to changing reverse gear. While, only pressing the button, the stop block can continue to move across the baffle, thereby change to reverse gear.
